Edna Ryan achieved national prominence in 1974 when she presented the Women’s Electoral Lobby’s submission to the National Wage Case, arguing that women should receive the same minimum rate of pay as men.
Now, more than four decades later, we still celebrate this major breakthrough in the long history of equal pay, and the life of the truly remarkable woman who made it happen.
The Edna Ryan Awards (known as the EDNAs) are awards for women who have made a feminist difference: the battlers and the unsung heroines who show commitment and determination.
These Awards recognise those whose activity advances the status of women, and categories include:
- Leadership
- Mentoring
- Community Activism
- Arts and Culture
- Media/Communication
- Workforce
- Grand Stirrer
The special Grand Stirrer Award is given each year to a woman who has boldly challenged the status quo. Past recipients include Anne Summers, Tara Moss, Sally McManus, Karen Willis, Amanda Hill, Mehreen Faruqi and fEMPOWER.
Since 1998 the EDNAs have celebrated the contribution of Edna Ryan by acknowledging women in NSW and the ACT who have had a significant impact on the social, economic, and political status of women and girls across a range of fields. Take a look around you and identify women who made a difference and consider nominating them for an award.
You can find more information and the nomination form HERE. Nominations close on 30th June 2022, and the Awards will be presented in the second half of 2022.
