Suze’s Songs Make Top 30 In The Australian Songwriting Awards
Songwriter Suze Pratten is thrilled to learn that two of her songs have made it into the top 30 in The Australian Songwriting Awards.
Songwriter Suze Pratten was thrilled to learn that two of her songs had made the top 30s lists in The Australian Songwriting Awards.
The first song, Voice! was selected in the open category.
“I wrote that back in 2021 to honour the Uluru Statement From The Heart,” Suze said.
“There was so much energy and effort and grace that went into that project and I wanted to support it.
“I teach choirs, singing, so music is my main job.
“I was able to rally around 700 to 800 singers to record themselves singing the song.
“That video is up on Youtube.
“It was a really great thing to do to work with people around the country.”
This year’s Awards combined 2023 and 2024, so the number of songs considered were doubled.
After the referendum, 42 percent of people wanted to honour the Uluru Statement From The Heart.
“There may have been a no vote, but where do we go from here?,” Suze said.
“I am an ally to First Nations people; I am not a First Nations person myself.
“We need to work towards a more fair and just outcome for our Indigenous Australians.
“They are the oldest culture on Earth, and the oldest living culture in our land.”
Suze said she went back to the Uluru Statement, for the second song - Unfinished Business.
“You see they asked for three things: Voice, Treaty, and Truth.
“I am incredibly touched by the way our Indigenous Australians are so gracious given all the violence they have suffered over the years - the invasion of their country,” Suze said.
“That’s what inspires me and inspires me to get the songs out there.
“Many have told me that they resonate with the words of the songs.
“We just need to get the word out.”
