Mining Industry Promotes Adaptation

Adaptation has long been the game that regional Aussies have had to play.

There are two options, we either adapt or we die.

Executive General Manager of Delivery for Transgrid, Craig Stallon and his team of workers build the infrastructure that communities needed to ensure they remained viable into the future.

Transgrid’s way of doing business is to have thousands of workers move into the community to build the infrastructure.

That’s 4000 to 5000 workers needing housing and health care professionals.

Mr Stallon said they could build housing and leave it there for the community to use when they leave.

The same goes for healthcare workers that they bring in to ensure their workers' health and well-being are taken off.

“Why not leave a housing estate that the community can use when we leave,” Mr Stallon said.

“Can we provide extra health services to these communities?”

When it comes to their workforce, Mr Stallon said the mining industry had been impacted by the shortages as well.

He said that they were competing on a global level for skilled staff and there were a couple of things to consider.

“We need them to come to the regions, but we need them to stay in the regions,” Mr Stallon said.

He also said we need to think more flexibly and grow our own, but we can’t wait a decade for them to finish university.

We need to do more on-the-job training.
