The National Parks and Wildlife Service, assisted by the Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW crews conducted a hazard reduction burn in Blue Mountains National Park earlier this week.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) conducted a hazard reduction burn in Blue Mountains National Park from Tuesday, September 3 from around 9 am.

This burn will reduce the risk of fire to the villages of Grose wold and Yarramundi.

The low-intensity burn was undertaken over two days to reduce fuel loads in the area.

The 175-hectare burn took place at Wood Creek between Cabbage Tree Road and Woods Reserve Road, extending up the valley close to Grose Wold Road, Grose Wold.

After commencing the burn at 9 am on Tuesday, crews continued into the evening, finishing up on the Wednesday.

NPWS thanked neighbours for their understanding about smoke from the burn, which could linger for several days.

Drivers, in particular, were warned to take care and people with asthma or who were susceptible to respiratory problems were advised to keep clear of the area or remain indoors, with windows and doors closed and to follow their health plan.

NPWS was assisted by NSW Rural Fire Service crews.

This burn was one of many hazard reduction operations undertaken by NPWS each year, many with assistance from the Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW.

All burns around the state are coordinated with the NSW Rural Fire Service to ensure the impact on the community is assessed at a regional level.

People with known health conditions can sign up to receive air quality reports, forecasts and alerts via email or SMS from the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.
