Hawkesbury Swimmers Unite For 5km Fundraising Swim
Hawkesbury Amateur Swim Club swimmers will take part in a 5km fundraising relay at the final Club Night - Friday December 16 2022
Hawkesbury Amateur Swim Club members of all ages will join together for a Swimathon at which they will swim a total of 5000 metres to raise funds.
Members both young and old will swim the 5km distance in the one night to raise some much-needed money after two years of lockdowns.
Club Spokesperson, Fiona Fagan said the club’s regular revenue, the weekly sausage sizzle, had been cancelled due to COVID restrictions. “Like most sporting clubs, COVID hit us hard,” Ms Fagan said.
“We used to have a sausage sizzle at every club night but it just got too difficult with COVID restrictions.
“Our momentum has also been impacted from stopping and starting over the past two years.”
The Swimathon will be run as a relay-style event, Friday December 16, the final club night for 2022.
Younger swimmes will swim half a lap, while the more experienced swimmers will attempt much larger distances.
Ms Fagan said mums and dads would also take part in the relay. “Our initial aim was to swim 5km to raise $5K, but we appreciate timies are tough for many people,” she said.
“So, we’re just asking for a small donation on our Go Fund Me page and if any businesses want to donate - we will give them a big shout out on social media.”
The Hawkesbury Amateur Swimming Club started primarily to conduct learn to swim classes in the river at the Windsor Bridge, though some races were held between pontoons moored on the river.
Club records date back to November 1956, but classes had been held for some years prior to that date.
Later lessons were held at the RAAF pool and the Hawkesbury Agricultural College (now part of the University of Western Sydney) pool.
The club moved to Richmond Pools in 1964 and still meets there on Friday evenings between October and April.
Swimmers of all ages who want to get stronger in the water and grow in confidence with racing are welcome to join the club.
