Guide Dogs Help Kids Practice Reading
Hawkesbury Mayor, Sarah McMahon spends a little time with Eddy and Gilly, the two guide dogs helping children learn to read at the Hawkesbury Library Service.
Who would’ve thought that a dog could help a child learn to read?
Hawkesbury Library Service has a couple of very special friends join them each week to give young readers the opportunity to practice their reading.
Eddy and Gilly are the centrepiece of Puppy Dog Tales, a new initiative for the library running weekly until the end of March.
The children read to Eddy and Gilly which increases their literacy skills and confidence.
It is also a truly unique experience that costs nothing but time.
A spokesperson from Windsor Library said the program had been hugely successful.
“We are totally booked out for the trial,” the spokesperson said.
“There are no vacancies.
“The children are enjoying it immensely, whether the puppies are enjoying it as much, who knows?”
Mayor McMahon thanked Guide Dogs Centre Glossodia for allowing Eddy and Gilly to be such an integral part of the initiative.
“I keep telling everyone that Hawkesbury City Council is doing really good work in our community and I am so proud of this initiative,” Mayor McMahon said.
