Careers NSW Under Spotlight During Careers Week

The successful rollout of Careers NSW, a free career guidance and employment advice serve, was a main focus of this year’s Careers Week (May 15 to 21).

The Department of Education program, was designed to help individuals navigate career information, explore education and training opportunities, and identify potential career pathways.

NSW Department of Education Acting Secretary, Murat Dizdar said Careers NSW services were available to all NSW residents, including students, many of whom were figuring out their career pathways.

“These services will complement the existing important work of our school-based careers advisors who know their students and school communities best,” Mr Dizdar said.

“Working together will maximise the opportunity for people to access information when transitioning from school to study or employment.”

The service offers free appointments with careers practitioners and are a great opportunity to talk through next steps toward a rewarding career.

Appointments are available at more than 40 locations across Sydney, New Castle and regional NSW, with more locations opening soon. Virtual appointments are also available.

Free appointments with industry experts are another popular service to provide first-hand knowledge and insights about what it is really like to work in an industry.

More than 195,000 people have accessed support through the Careers NSW website where there is customised support for people including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples; regional and remote communities; culturally, religiously, linguistically diverse people and vulnerable groups.

The Careers NSW website also has a range of useful resources and tools that people can explore to findout more about new and traditional careers and can help individuals get a first job, a new job, or a better job.

The Careers NSW school trials are continuing to expand support to young people, now covering more than 60 high schools across the state offering services including:

• Group careers exploration sessions from Year 7;
• Parent/Carer information sessions;
• Student appointments with a careers practitioner;
• Student mock interviews; and
• Careers workshops and presentations.
