Hawkesbury Valley Baptist Church Pastor, Phil Evans is not above lending a practical hand when needed. In fact, when he learned there was already an evacuation centre set up in town, he walked right on over with the Chaplain of North Richmond Public School and Richmond High School, Hormis Atoori, to ask how they could lend a hand.

Ministry Leader for Missions and Community, Linnah Hahn said once Pastor Phil made calls to fill the need for towels and blankets, they were supplied. “The people were extremely grateful,” Mrs Hahn said.

“They (Pastor Phil and Hormis Atoori) made a tremendous difference to what was going on that night.

A simple thing like a towel can make a huge difference.”

Pastor Phil spent that night and those following to keep feelers out for people, chatting with them to find out if they needed anything.

He even arranged a washing machine for someone who needed one. Mrs Hahn said Pastor Phil has been part of the Hawkesbury area since he was a skateboarding youth.

“I am a huge Phil Evans fan,” Mrs Hahn said.

“When he heard that there was an evacuation centre, he just put his hand up and said, ‘How can I help?”.

“He’s a local boy who did what local boys do, which is get stuck in.”
